Hail Dent Repair Edmond, or Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), is one of the oldest concepts of auto body panel repair known to the auto body repair industry. Years ago when an automobile panel was dented by collision, the panel was repaired by the technician working to remove most of the damage with body picks. The technician would gain access to the back side of the damaged area and use a pick (a rod of steel with a pick type end) to massage the damaged metal back into its original position. When the metal was back to its original shape and position, the technician would use lead to fill the remainder of the damage then refinish the affected panel.
This process was used to repair all body damage from very large dents to small. The technician who was well-practiced in this process could remove small damage completely without using any lead to fill because there was no imperfection left; however, at the time there was no paint available which would withstand the process. It would always crack and require the panel to be refinished regardless of the size of the damage. Through years of development by the Automotive Industry, many technological advances have been made, one of which has been the advent of polymers for paint which gives it flexibility to be used on plastic bumpers and plastic panels designed to be bent or as in the case of a bumper, bumped at low speeds without causing structural or paint damage.
The same paint used on the plastic panels is now being used on the entire vehicle in most cases and not only will it withstand the small dent damage hail creates, it will also withstand the repair. The only time the paint will not withstand the PDR process is when it is damaged (i.e. cracked or scratched) prior to the repair being performed.
